Here are some great ways to save when buying groceries:
SHOP AT LARGER RETAILERS: because when it comes to groceries, bigger is typically cheaper. Volume speaks volumes, and supermarkets’ profits are based on volume so they can afford to give steeper discounts than small grocers. Also try shopping at different supermarkets to compare prices. You'll often find that there’s a less expensive one among a group.
USE A LIST…ALWAYS!: and you’ll find it much less challenging to save on groceries. We’ve made it EVEN EASIER for you by providing you with printable grocery lists. The trick, of course, is to stick to your list! Don't buy anything that isn't on it -- no ifs, ands or buts. It’s also important to check and see what you have on hand so you don't buy duplicates. This idea alone could be a challenge for anyone who is accustomed to no-holds-barred spending at the grocery store.
MAKE SURE YOU DON’T ALREADY HAVE IT: because there are many times you put items on your grocery list because you forgot that you already have them on hand, leaving you with duplicates (usually of items you rarely use).
KEEP AN EYE ON THE CASH REGISTER: to avoid mistakes. It’s estimated that up to $2.5 billion per year is made in scanning errors. That's a lot of money left on the check-out counter! Supermarkets often put items on sale that don't always get to the register. Also, checkers can easily make mistakes when making entries.
WRITE DOWN DISCRETIONARY PURCHASES: because it will take a while before you are able to stick to a grocery list. Write down everything that you buy at the store that isn't on your list. This way you'll be able to see how much those items add to the total cost. It also lets you know how much you COULD have saved.
KEEP YOUR COUPONS IN THE CAR: to avoid leaving them at home. It's too easy to run off to the store with your list in hand, only to find when you get to the check-out counter that you forgot your coupons. Clip them to your list and keep them in hand until you've gone through the check-out lane.
LOOK FOR STORES THAT DOUBLE, OR EVEN TRIPLE COUPON VALUE...they exist!
USE STORE SAVINGS CARDS: even if you’re too lazy to sign up. Every store has these cards today, but they do help you save money. Just take the extra 5 minutes to sign up- you’ll be thanking us later.
ALWAYS GET A RAIN CHECK: on items that are out of stock. If the store runs out of a sale item on your list, ask for a rain check and come back when the item is available.
